New Services in the Total Health and Wellness Center
Column #386, 11/20/08
by Jake Mossman, Owner of Taos Pharmacy

We are pleased to announce a number of new services available in The Total Health and Wellness Center of Taos.

We will host a free weight management support group meeting every Thursday evening from 5:15 pm to 6 pm. Excess weight is a major risk factor for a number chronic illnesses including heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Jen Birge, registered dietician, will be available every Thursday evening beginning December 4 to help those who are trying to lose weight. Jen has worked at Holy Cross Hospital, Taos Pueblo, and independently helping individuals manage their weight. Support group participants will weigh in to monitor their progress and meet to share recipes and ideas to help each other achieve their weight management goals.

Dr. Mitchell Kershner, Naturopathic Doctor (ND), will be available Fridays from 10 am to 6 pm to provide naturopathic medicine services. Naturopathic doctors attend a 4- to 5-year doctoral program of study to prepare them to provide a holistic approach to health care. The principles of naturopathic medicine are: do no harm, work with the healing power of nature, treat the cause, the doctor is a teacher, treat the whole person, and prevent disease when possible. The basis of treatments are diets and diet supplements that restore balance, herbal medicines to help alleviate symptoms, water in all forms (liquid, steam, and ice) to assist healing, homeopathy to enhance the body's natural powers of healing, physio-medicine (ultra sound, manipulation, and other physical modalities) to restore the body, and counseling and stress management to address the causes of much disease.

Melissa Golladay, pharmacist, is trained in the use of nutrients to create health. Your body recognizes specific nutrients that drive the body's chemical reactions and uses these nutrients to maintain health. Areas of focus include allergies, improved brain function, depression, GERD (reflux), irritable bowel syndrome, and joint health. Of particular interest as we approach winter is joint health prior to ski season. Melissa will offer consultations aimed at preparing your joints for the demands of the ski season. Melissa is available for consultations, recommendations, and group presentations. Melissa also enjoys sharing her knowledge of raw food preparation. Raw foods can be healing and energizing, Melissa can help you make them fun, tasty, and exciting.

We feel these new services fit well with the mission of The Total Health and Wellness Center of Taos to provide our community resources to achieve and maintain health. We will continue to develop our service to help you participate in your own health.
