Clinical Service of the Month

Complete Lipid Profile Testing Available at Taos Pharmacy. We offer complete lipid profile testing at Taos Pharmacy for the low price of $25.00. This test can be provided upon your request without a doctor's order. The test requires only a small capillary tube of blood that is acquired from a fingertip. The blood sample is read by the Cholestech LDX meter in a matter of minutes. The test results will provide your total cholesterol, HDL, triglyceride, LDL, VLDL, and glucose levels. The results are printed on an adhesive strip for you to maintain a record.

In addition to test results, we also provide nutritional counseling for dyslipidemia (elevated cholesterol). There are a number of effective nutritional and herbal therapies for elevated cholesterol. We are familiar with available therapies and stock many of them. We feel the test and counseling are an excellent value at $25.00, worth as much as $150.00 through the physician-lab system.

Our test is CLIA waived, often billable to insurance and medicare. We will communicate your progress and keep your physician informed. We believe direct clinical services such as our cholesterol program to be the future of pharmacy care. At Taos Pharmacy we work hard to stay at the forefront of our profession. We believe that the patients can contribute valuable insight into their own healthcare; we listen to their input, and provide information to help with their decision making. All of our clinical services are accompanied by useful information to help you make informed decisions. Call (505) 758-3342 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Natural or Alternative Therapy of the Month

One Tablespoonful of Flaxseed Oil a Day Can Keep the Doctor Away. While it is true that we should not get more than 30% of our calories from fat, a lack of dietary essential fatty acids has been suggested to increase the risk of many chronic disease such as heart disease, cancer, and stroke. It is estimated that 80% of Americans are deficient in linoleic (omega-3) and linoleic (omega-6) fatty acids. These essential fatty acids are important to nerve cells, cell membranes and prostaglandins. In addition to their importance to normal cell function, they are being shown to be protective against heart disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and skin diseases such as eczema. Over 60 health conditions have been shown to benefit from essential fatty-acid supplementation.

Flaxseed oil is considered by many to be the answer to restoring the proper level of essential fatty acids. It contains both alpha-linolenic and linoleic acids and is the world's richest source of omega-3 fatty acids. Because it is damaged by heat and light, you must add it to foods after it is cooked or use it in salad dressing. Unfortunately, flaxseed oil does not taste very good. Some uses as food supplementation include salad dressing, dipping bread into it, adding it to hot or cold cereal, or spraying it over popcorn. The recommended daily dose is 1 tablespoonful (about 10 gm), however, it may be preferable to take an equivalent supplement.

Over 60 double-blind studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are very effective in lowering blood pressure. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in hundreds of studies. Fish oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids but has been shown to deplete antioxidants when taken and to cause poor blood glucose control in diabetics. Flaxseed oil does not cause either of these negative effects. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been studied for glaucoma, asthma, eczema, and other autoimmune conditions.

Taos Pharmacy carries flaxseed oil supplements by PHYTOPHARMICA. We have in stock both liquid flaxseed oil and capsules of the oil. Mention this article when you ask for Phytopharmica Flaxseed Oil and get 10% off the regular price.

Compound of the Month

Compounded Prescriptions to Meet Your Specific Needs. A 61-year-old man in good health was diagnosed with onchomycosis (nail fungus) involving the large toes of both feet and the thumb of the right hand. The total nail was involved in all affected nails. The patient was instructed to apply one drop of 0.4% ketoconazole in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to the base of the affected nails twice daily and to apply one to three drops of 0.3% thymol in chloroform under the nail daily. Treatment was started on February 5 and reevaluated 30 and 60 days later. After the first 30 days, the patient's nail base appeared normal. After the second 30 days, the nail was 90% normal and the fungus appeared to be gone. The patient was encouraged to continue treatment for 6 months total as prophylaxis.
