Can Some Bacteria Be Good For You?
Column #11, 3/1/00
by Jake Mossman, Owner of Taos Pharmacy

One of the ironies of medicine is the fact that our success in combating disease-causing bacteria may actually be resulting in bacteria that may cause more severe illness. In years past, hundreds of thousands of beneficial microorganisms lived in the soil and water. These bacteria helped metabolize elements into vital micronutrients that provided food for plant life to thrive. People and animals ingested these bacteria as they ate, bacteria would colonize their intestinal tracts and live symbiotically with their hosts. These helpful bacteria have recently been termed probiotics (for life) in contrast to antibiotics (against life). Through the years of industrial, agricultural, and medical use of chemicals intended to kill bacteria, many of the probiotic organisms in our environment have been reduced. In particular, the widespread use of antibiotics has affected the balance of probiotic intestinal bacteria in people who use them regularly. Additionally, our diet high in processed food and sugar and low in fiber contributes to an imbalance.

Supplements of probiotic bacteria can help restore the balance. Two important species are the lactobacillus and bifidobacteria. Bifidobacteria are the only intestinal bacteria that produce acetic acid. Lactobacillus bacteria produce lactic acid. Acetic acid is important in maintaining proper acid balance in the colon. Acidophilus is a form of lactobacillus found primarily in the small intestine and slightly in the large intestine. Bifidobacteria are found primarily in the large intestine. Maintaining proper intestinal acid balance (slightly acidic pH) is helpful in fending off many harmful organisms, as most of them cannot survive in an acidic environment. High meat, high fat diet, alcohol, stress, birth control pills, and of course antibiotics kill helpful bacteria and alter colonic pH, often leading to overgrowth of harmful organisms including candida.

Probiotic supplements can help prevent and improve treatment of yeast infections, ear infections, gas, bloating, and diarrhea. Maintaining a healthy bacteria balance might also be helpful in acne, eczema, cold sores, bad breath, mouth ulcers, vitamin deficiencies, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome and indigestion.
