Homeopathy for What Ails You
Column #149, 2/19/04
by Jake Mossman, Owner of Taos Pharmacy

Homeopathy is a form of treatment founded on principles very different from western medicine. One of the primary principles is that the body has significant powers to heal itself. Homeopathic remedies are intended to stimulate these natural forces of recovery. Homeopathy was developed in the 1800s and is a popular form of treatment worldwide. Homeopathic remedies are available in pillules, drops, creams, and gels. Homeopathic remedies are very dilute formulations of the active ingredients. One of the more controversial principles of homeopathy is the principle that dilution increases the effect of the remedy. Because they do not contain powerful chemicals, homeopathic remedies typically have very few side effects or drug interactions.

Following are a few of the more popular homeopathic remedies:

Aconite is used for conditions with sudden, violent and brief symptoms. It is used at early signs of a cold. It is also used for anxiety, panic, fear, and restlessness.

Arnica is a popular treatment for injury. It is one the best-known and widely accepted homeopathic remedies in the US. It is used in creams, gels, or pillules for bruising, sprains, physical exhaustion, backache, and burns.

Arsen Alb is used for hay fever, diarrhea, nausea, and dry, burning throat.

Belladonna is used for conditions that involve sudden hot, dry heat such as fever or sunburn. It is also used for acne, boils, heavy periods, and symptoms of PMS. Belladonna is also used for symptoms of teething in infants.

Hypericum is used for painful conditions such as lacerations or wounds. It is used for insect bites and abscesses.

Ignatia is used for piercing headache, sore throat, sleeplessness, prolonged grief, or insensitivity to tobacco.

Nux vom is used for stomach and intestinal conditions such as indigestion, constipation, or "hang over."

Pulsatilla is used for conditions involving yellow discharge such as styes, itchy eyes, and hay fever.

Rhus Tox is used for rheumatic aches and pains and overexertion. It is used for diaper rash in infants.

Sulfur is used for skin and intestinal tract diseases. It is used for hot, red, and itching skin such as in eczema and acne. It is used for burning and itching hemorrhoids, diarrhea, and heartburn.

These are just a few of the remedies available in homeopathic formulas.
