Diabetes Education Program
Column #31, 3/27/01
by Jake Mossman, Owner of Taos Pharmacy

Taos Pharmacy, through a grant from Ross Nutritionals, kicked off a diabetes education program on Thursday, March 22, 2001, in the Ramada Inn in Taos NM. The program has 9 more sessions over the next year. It is designed to give patients the opportunity to learn about their disease, take control of their condition, and to reduce their risk of complications. Periodic assessments will give participants feedback regarding their progress.

The first session included an overview of the disease and what it means to people with diabetes. Participants' current states were assessed and the development of individualized care plans was started. Future sessions will include free blood glucose monitors, shopping for groceries, preparing a meal, and exercise you do at home. The sessions are designed to give you hands-on experience and practical tools that you can use in your everyday life. The emphasis is on learning in a fun environment. As you will see, materials, testing and food provided will far exceed the cost of the program.

Program costs are $25 per session or all ten sessions for $200. If you missed the first session, call us for the cost to attend the remaining nine sessions. Since the program is funded in part by the grant from Ross Nutritional Products, we are allowed to offer financial aid for participation at your request. You may attend for free if you have the need to do so and request it. Again, call us for more information about scholarships for attendance at the sessions.

Program staff is: Jake Mossman, registered pharmacist; Becky Mossman, registered nurse; and Dr. Mitchell Kershner, naturopathic physician. They will help your understand your current condition and to develop a plan to bring your blood glucose under control. Call Taos Pharmacy at (505) 758-3342 to enroll in the remaining sessions. Remember, our funding allows us to provide the program for free upon your request!
