Check Your First Aid Kit Regularly
Column #37, 7/20/01
by Jake Mossman, Owner of Taos Pharmacy

The goal of first aid is to give immediate care after an accident. First aid alone may be enough or may be intended to stabilize the patient for transport to medical treatment without causing further injury. It is important to have a first aid kit in your home and another in your vehicle. It is equally important to restock your first aid kits regularly to be certain that you will have what you need when you need it. Although everyone's needs are different there are certain conditions every first aid kit should be prepared for.

Cuts and Scrapes

Current thought is that keeping minor cuts and scrapes moist promotes healing and reduces scarring. A variety of self-adhesive bandages for wounds of different types and sizes should be on hand. New hydrated dressings are available for specific wounds such as burns and blisters. First aid antiseptic to prevent infection is useful.

Stomach and Intestinal Problems

GI problems of various types are common. Simple antacids, laxatives and stool softeners, anti-diarrhea products, and anti-gas products can relieve uncomfortable symptoms.

Cold Symptoms

Colds are common sources of discomfort. Decongestants, acetaminophen, anti-inflammatory medications, pain relieving lozenges and cough suppressants are good to have on hand.

Poisoning

Poison prevention is very important when small children are present. However, it is equally important to have activated charcoal, ipecac, and laxative present to treat accidental poisoning.

Skin Problems

Insect bites and stings and rashes are common ailments. Hydrocortisone cream and astringent dressings can help relieve symptoms.

It is also important to know which conditions are best not to self treat. These include ear pain, toothache, and vomiting. These can all be signs of more serious conditions and should be evaluated by medical personnel.
