Renewal and a New Year
Column #392, 1/1/09
by Jake Mossman, Owner of Taos Pharmacy

The end of one year and the beginning of a new one are events that tend to make us reflect on our current state and our future. It is a time to take stock of our lives. Focusing on health, the New Year is a good time to assess your current health status. There are a number of areas where The Total Health and Wellness Center of Taos can help with your health issues. We would like to focus on three specific areas of health consciousness.

First is smoking cessation. Tobacco use is associated with a number of diseases including heart disease and cancer. If you smoke, your first step toward improved health is to QUIT SMOKING. This is especially true if you have existing conditions such as high blood pressure, elevated blood cholesterol levels, or diabetes. We are funded through a grant from the New Mexico Department of Health to provided counseling and smoking cessation products to people who do not have insurance that covers them. Our pharmacist is certified to prescribe prescription smoking cessation medications such as Nicotrol or Chantix without a visit to the doctor. If you smoke, please consider contacting us to schedule a counseling session.

Second is weight management. Being overweight or obese is considered epidemic in the U.S. Excess weight contributes to many chronic illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. Even small amounts of weight loss can improve your health. Our wellness center is hosting a free weight management support group weekly on Thursday evenings from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. Hosted by Registered Dietician Jen Birge, the support group discusses strategies for weight management. Included in the program is a discussion of Bios Life Slim. Bios Life Slim is a proprietary blend of natural products that helps your body learn to burn fat, not store it. Bios Life Slim is considered a dietary supplement and a food so it can be taken with medication that can be taken with food. It does not contain stimulants so it does not cause jitters or increased heart rate. It is a blend of natural fiber sources, plant polysaccharides, phytosterols, and vitamins. Our weight management support group is open to everyone interested in losing weight.

Third is health risk assessment. We provide a variety of health monitoring services such as lipid profiles, blood pressure, blood glucose, A1c, and body mass index (BMI). Our monitoring services include brief consultations so that you understand the significance of your numbers and your health risks in easy-to-understand language. If you desire more in-depth consultations we can help with a health improvement plan to help you work with your doctors to reach your health goals.

If you are interested in improving your health in 2009, think of a visit to The Total Health and Wellness Center of Taos as your first step. Call us today for more information, at (575) 737-5810. Think healthy, live healthy, be healthy.
