Asthma accounts for 10 million doctor's office visits and 1.8 million emergency room visits each year and is increasing. Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease, affecting more than 5 million American children. Deaths from asthma are also increasing.
The key to reducing the risk of hospitalization or death from asthma is proper disease management. Asthma management includes identifying triggers, use of a peak flow meter, medication management, and an asthma action plan.
Key to identifying triggers is maintaining an asthma diary. Exposure to triggers will result in worsening symptoms. Even though it is unreasonable to believe you can completely avoid asthma triggers, removing as many as possible from the home and work area can keep you healthier.
A peak flow meter is a device used to inform you of your lung capacity. Decreasing lung capacity indicates worsening asthma symptoms. Peak flow readings can therefore be used to anticipate worsening symptoms.
Medication use is increased in cases of worsening symptoms. Increased doses and additional medications can be used to control your asthma before it becomes too severe or dangerous.
Formulation of an asthma action plan is critical to avoiding a serious, even life-threatening episode. Anticipating changes that precede a serious attack can keep you out of the hospital.
